My cat has a UTI, is there any home remedies I can try?
person asked on Sun, 14 Dec, 2008
I researched it some and it said the vet wasn't a good idea because the antibiotics can actually hurt the cat. What are some good home remedies?
Figment 58 replied on Sun, 14 Dec, 2008
well, do more research, cats don't eat cranberries and if not treated with antibiotics, the cat can die.
Tif replied on Sun, 14 Dec, 2008
I would definently go to the vet. It might not be a UTI that is your cats issue. Our cat acted like it had a UTI but it actually had a buildup of crystals in its urine- Could have killed him. Yikes. Anyway we went to the vet, he gave us some paste stuff to give to our cat and now our cat is on a special diet.

Don't believe everything that comes up on the internet; look for reliable sites, not those who claim they have the 'answer'.
The UTI could come from several sources, and only a vet can diagnose the situation. It can be painful, so you want to help your cat. The most common antibiotic is inexpensive and safe and effective.
If the UTI is caused by struvite crystals, there are some home remedies that can prevent it from happening again. But if not, there are not. But without a vet diagnosis, you cannot tell. And guessing wrong is bad for your cat.

im sorry im new to cats what is UTI? lol but i still think u should probably take her to the vet sounds like the safesest way to go
FlowersinWinter replied on Sun, 14 Dec, 2008
Take your cat to the vet asap. If this has been happening for a few days, get your cat to an emergency vet. Antibiotics may have some side effects, but much less worse than the bladder infection that occurs from a UTI. My cat is taking Clavamox or Baytril and is doing much better. She was in pain from being unable to urinate much. Also, she had blood and pus in her urine. If there is no actual infection, the vet may just treat her with an anti-inflammatory. Your vet may let you take a urine sample in to avoid stressing the cat with the needle.

Well, hon, research some more because whatever lameass site told you that is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.
What you can do before you take your cat to the vet tomorrow is giving him a little baking soda sprinkled on food. This will often help ease the symptoms, but is far from a cure. Your cat needs antibiotics, and fast, or this can get worse wherein he will die a very painful death, or have to have a major operation.

Well, of course there are critics of antibiotics all over, but by not taking your cat to the vet, your are risking an infection spreading beyond her bladder and into the kidneys and eventually other organs. Trust me, my last cat took antibiotics about 5 times in his life for things including UTI's among other problems, and he lived to be 27. Also, even if you were going to try a "home remedy", maybe theres something else going on that you don't know about. Maybe your cat has kidney stones, or crystals in its urine, who knows until you go to the vet. Please take your cat to the vet. If you have ever had a UTI and know how painful and uncomfortable it is, you would be rushing that poor baby to the vet right now to stop the suffering. Don't play around with something that can turn serious in no time.
Ruby replied on Sun, 14 Dec, 2008
Your sources are wrong- the UTI is hurting the cat, not antibiotics. Please bring your cat to the vet. The cat is probably incredibly uncomfortable, and only the vet can treat the problem. There are no "home remedies" that will help- this is serious!
birdgirl replied on Sun, 14 Dec, 2008
You NEED to bring the cat to the vet..not sure what bogus research you did..but it is wrong. If your cat is a male he can get plugged and can die quite quickly. Don't take any chances with your cats life..get it to the vet. UTIs can be very painful..please get your cat the proper medical it needs and stop trying to play doctor.

What you read was wrong. Cats with a UTI /need/ antibiotics from the vet. There are no home remedies you can try. This infection could quickly become deadly if you do not have it treated properly.
Also, my advice to you is that if you are not already feeding wet/canned food, start doing so. It's much healthier for cats than dry food.
The reason is, in the wild, cats normally get most of their water content directly from their prey items and drink very little. Domestic cats are no different, and because of the fact that they are designed to take in water with their meal, they have a very low thirst drive. Cats often just don't drink enough. This leads to urinary tract infections and crystals. The bit about dry food being better for teeth is a myth and has not been proven in the least (cats barely even chew their dry food and, really, does a pretzel clean /your/ teeth? Cats should have their teeth brushed with cat toothbrushes and cat toothpaste at least a few times a week as well as see the vet for dental cleanings when necessary /regardless/ of what they are being fed). Canned/wet food is better because it more closely mimics the cat's natural diet. More on why canned food is best:

Another option to get cats to drink more would be a cat fountain. Cats tend to like to drink from running water and cat fountains see to that need, encouraging cats to take in more water.

No that's not true. Our cat has UTI and we took her to the vet and got a antibiotic which she took for a week. After that she was completely fine.

The difference between a urinary tract infection home remedy and a conventional treatment such as antibiotics is quite profound. Antibiotics simply deal with curing the symptoms of the infection with no reference at all to the cause whereas a urinary tract home remedy treats the body as a whole, looking at causes as well as symptoms and dealing with both.
Bacteria is naturally present in the...
